Drug Court

This past Friday I attended Drug Court. It was so AWESOME! I went to the justice building with my Substance Abuse class and sat in on an actual drug court. The judge came in and we all rose. Besides my class there were about 20 people who were there to stand before the judge. The way it works is people who are eligible for it have to go to rehab and find a job. Each person is assigned a color and everyday they have to call in to see if it is their color that gets a drug test that day. There are four phases to the program and after so long of staying clean they move through the phases and onto a graduation and if you graduate all the charges are dropped against you. While there the judge calls each person up and looks at their drug test and the report from their rehab and the majority of them are just told that they are doing a great job and to continue or find a job. However, there were two guys who didn't pass their drug tests or didn't go to rehab so they were put back in jail for the weekend. It was crazy to see them just hauled off. There were also those who were incarcerated looking to plead guilty to enter into drug court. The judge came down to answer questions and told us that 65% of those that do drug court graduate and of that 65% 90% stay clean. I loved it and will probably go back. Next stop is AA, and I can't wait!
